"The Glory of God Is Man Fully Alive."  St Irenaeus

Artist Statement

When I went to look around art college in 1996 with the vague pipe dream of completely changing my world, I wonder if the tutor noticed my guarded look of disdain when she suggested that I would love all the tearing and sticking I would be doing there. Not me! - I knew I only wanted to paint!

Now, the lines and transparency of an old dress pattern, a long forgotten ticket beaten and worn, an image in a magazine, the meandering lines of a map, - all of these hold great appeal for me. I carefully preserve them and now they spill out from the drawers and cupboards of my studio. Any of these might one day be just the spark to say that its exactly the right colour, the interesting image, the appropriate piece of text or has just the luscious tactile quality needed in the foundation of gestural marks and colour of my painting, like the piecing together of a patchwork quilt.

As I continue to make bold marks and fine lines, weaving in and layering colour, I integrate more hand printed papers, image transfers, printmaking, text, imagery or discarded fabrics and drawn line - watching as a story emerges to me in this abstract image. Partially hidden layers wait for discovery of a closer inspection, an order from the chaos that becomes for me a visual prayer.
